Historical Archive

Presentation and Colections

The Historical Archive of the National Sports Museum is responsible for the preservation, conservation, management and dissemination of the assets of interest to the memory, study and history of Sport.

Colections

The collection of the Historical Archive consists of varied documentation and some documentary funds, of which we highlight:

António Capela Photographic Collection

António Capela was one of the most important Portuguese sports photographers of his time (alongside Nuno Ferrari). In the collection of the National Sports Museum, there are about 10,000 photographs (paper evidence), as well as negatives and slides, which testify to the historical course of sport in Portugal from the 1950s to the 1990s, through the lens of this photographer.

Prof. Moniz Pereira Collection

Prof. Moniz Pereira is better known as the “Sir of Athletics”. In the collection of the National Sports Museum there are various objects, documents, books, notebooks, musical guidelines, various diplomas, medals, multiple membership cards and even photo albums in which he records different moments in his life.

National Register of Sports Clubs and Federations Collection

This registration consists of the approval process of the statutes of clubs and sports federations throughout the national territory, between 1943 and 1974, by the then designated Directorate-General for Physical Education, Sports and School Health.

The application of Decree No. 32.946, of August 3, 1943, which required the authorization of the state so that citizens could join sports groups, leaving out only Mocidade Portuguesa and the National Foundation for Joy at Work (currently INATEL), was at the time a common duty in practically all areas of society. This obligation ended with the publication of Decree-Law No. 594/74, of November 7th, which started to allow the “right of free association”, a right acquired after April 25th. This registration became a notarial competence.
